Open Mobile Terminal Platform

The Open Mobile Terminal Platform (OMTP) is an operator sponsored forum for gathering and driving mobile terminal requirements. It is technology neutral and its' recommendations are intended for deployment across the range of:

 technology platforms

 Operating System (OS)

 middleware layers

There are currently nine full members (operators) including Orange. OMTP has over 30 members overall including major players in the handset, hardware and OS space. It has focussed on user experience, device management and security issues and produced many documents in such diverse areas as the application security framework, data and audio connectors, hardware trusted environment and advanced device management.

One of the recently-produced documents we thought you might be interested in is
'Recommended Practices for Connected Applications'.  It's been produced by OMTP and not by Orange, and has some great recommendations in it…

Recommended Practices for Connected Applications

In 2007, after wide industry consultation and agreement, OMTP released a document entitled "Recommended Practices for Connected Applications". Its aim is to significantly improve the mobile consumer user experience and aims to drive a greater adoption of 'connected' application services.

Many connected application problem have risen, because, prior to the release of this document there have been no generic written guidelines to define common practices, and therefore applications have been released with no reference to hierarchy or best practice.

Benefits of the OMTP recommended practices, include:

 extended battery life

connection management which will help manage bills

the usage of connected applications will be driven up

(A 'connected' application is one which needs to be in contact with another device through local connectivity such as Bluetooth or remotely with a server using GPRS or 3G connections in order to retrieve data/information.)
