We're looking for apps to sell to Orange UK customers. These will be part of the UK catalogue, accessed through the new Orange App Shop client, WAP portal and web.
Orange customers can now access your mobile apps via the Orange App Shop, an on-device client
(other access points include the mobile WAP portal and the web portal).
This new client officially launched at LeWeb in Paris, 9th Dec 2009 with Orange UK and
Orange France being the first countries to roll it out to Orange customers.
It provides customers with simple, easy, one-click access to your apps from the Orange homescreen, a sophisticated search functionality and clear, straightforward app categorisation including: ‘new releases’, ‘top ten’, and ‘my stuff’.
Take a look at the demo below, which illustrates how Orange customers will browse, download and purchase your apps...
Orange App Shop client devices
As the first stage of the large plan, the Orange App Shop client is being rolled out as follows:
over-the-air...
So far this year, in the UK, customers who already own a Nokia 6700, Sony Ericsson C510, C905, W595, W910i and W995 have all received the App Shop over-the-air (OTA) to their device, with an update to the Nokia 6303 to follow shortly this month.
In France, the OTA update has been sent to customers with the Sony Ericsson W995. Those using a Nokia 6700, Sony Ericsson C905, W595, W910i and Sony Ericsson Yari will also soon receive the Orange App Shop client OTA this month.
pre-installed...
Plus, the client has already been pre-installed onto brand new SE W995 devices being shipped to stores from the factory, with the first shipment due to arrive in both the UK and France this month. The next devices in the pre-installed roll-out plan are the Nokia 6700 in the UK and France and the Sony Ericsson Yari in France.
In total, a massive 1.3 million Orange customer will shortly have access to the mobile application catalogue through the Orange App Shop client. And that’s just in the UK and France, and just in the next few weeks.
And that's only the start; we'll soon be rolling it out onto LG, HTC, Motorola, Nokia, RIM, Samsung and Sony Ericsson devices.
If you want Orange customers to access your app via the Orange App Shop client (and other access points), submit your mobile app now
mobile WAP portal: the mobile app catalogue from Orange World
Mobile apps in the catalogue can be accessed, browsed and purchased through a dedicated ‘app shop’ icon on Orange World - Orange's popular mobile WAP portal. Orange World features on all of our WAP-capable handsets.
The app shop icon appears on the Orange World homescreen, prominently located so it’s really easy for customers to find, browse and buy your apps.
All apps will be considered for the app catalogue, but those that meet the app requirements are more likely to be accepted. Don't forget to look at the categories also.
All apps for the Orange UK catalogue must be in English.
If suitable, why not consider other country markets for your app?
Some text-light English apps would work equally as well in France, Spain or Belgium.
If you’d like to take advantage of these additional markets, then all you need to do is translate the description of your app (into French, Spanish and Dutch), and re-submit your app to us.
If your app is not text-light, then you may want to consider translating all text (any instructions, icons, help files etc) – you’ll then be able to submit us this version for sale in the Shop in other appropriate countries.
Of course, if you already have multilingual versions of your app, then please submit them to us!
how are apps currently categorised when accessed via the WAP portal?
When customers visit the catalogue via the WAP site, they see apps listed in a number of categories, making it really easy for them to browse.
(As you would expect, the categories are different for consumers and the business customers).
app categories in the Orange UK
consumer catalogue
Categories for the consumer catalogue are currently as follows:
Just for Fun
Phone Magic
Astrology Zone
Men’s Zone

When a customer accesses the catalogue, they are able to see the categories which contain apps appropriate for the device they are using (if there are no apps appropriate for their device in a category, this category will not appear).
Categories will be changed periodically, to give us the flexibility to include different apps, as customer needs change. If your app doesn’t fit into one of the existing categories, please submit it to us anyway – if we really like it, we’ll change the categories so that we can include it.

Note that when a customer accesses the app catalogue through the WAP site, they will only be able to see apps which are appropriate for the device they are using.
coverage requirements for devices, platforms & OSs
To keep things really clear, we’ve put together some guidelines relating to device, platform and OS coverage required for your apps:
if you’re submitting an app for our new on-device App Shop client, take a look at the devices it’s currently installed on – please cover as many as you can. if you’re submitting a Java app for the catalogue for access via the WAP portal, it should cover 80% of the relevant country’s ‘Top 50 Devices’ list, and if your Java app uses specialised features of a device, it should cover as many appropriate devices as possible. if you’re submitting an Android / RIM BlackBerry / Symbian / Windows Mobile app for the catalogue for access via the WAP portal, then it should cover the appropriate complete device range. you will need to provide new versions of your app as appropriate on an ongoing basis to cover new devices, or changes in the Top 50.
Ideally, all apps submitted should meet the appropriate coverage requirements.
We’ll work with you to decide the retail price for your app in the catalogue on a product by product basis. We encourage you to propose a suitable price initially, which we’ll review, and may change slightly (up or down) based on value to the customer and our knowledge of the market.
The upper limit for apps in the Orange UK Shop is £10.
