Consumers should expect to be able to run the same Java application on a number of different devices, and for it to work every time.
They currently can't.
Not only is this a barrier to sales, but the cost and resource involved in testing and signing a number of versions of one application is high, for both the operator and for the developer.
It's in the interests of all of us to decrease the cost of testing, and to make it easier for more people to run Java applications on their devices, thereby increasing the number of applications downloaded and run.
Those of you involved in Java application development will be all-too-familiar with this problem, and we know you're interested in helping us resolve it.

Some time ago, we interviewed some of you to find out what you thought of the situation, and also held a session on this subject at our Orange Partner Camp event in Florida,
April 2006 (take a look at the presentation from Orange Partner Camp, Florida ).
Your feedback was invaluable. You told us that Java de-fragmentation was a real issue, and that typically you were generating hundreds of versions for each title.
Following your feedback, we've put together a solution in the form of a set of guidelines which you can use immediately to help reduce the number of versions required, while the de-fragmentation issue is being resolved.
