Friday 5th June 2009
we've done it!

We're at the end of a long hard week here at JavaOne and are happy to say we've met our challenge of delivering 5 apps on 5 devices in 5 days.

The apps are live on the Orange UK Application Shop and are available on many more devices than expected.

Details of the apps will be published on the site early next week.

UPDATE - the 5 apps that made it are now featured on the challenge page

Many thanks to all those involved in making the challenge a success.

Have a great weekend.

Thursday 4th June 2009

do you want the good news or the bad news?

The good news is that the 5 devices turned into 65, with the pre-school alphabet app (did I tell you about that one?) being deployed not only on the 5 devices we specified, but on 55 more devices (and with only 10 builds!). Wow. Anand from Impetus Technologies is well-pleased. And so are we!

The bad news? A couple of the apps came unstuck at the last minute: one couldn’t quite get a licence to obtain web-based content (but hopefully will do so soon), and the other needed back-end integration that takes longer than 5 days. It’s being scheduled in, but will take a couple of weeks to get sorted.

So if 2 apps have failed, we only got 3 in the shop yes?

Nope.

"the good news"

Back in the UK, the team got onto one of the developers who entered the challenge (but who couldn’t be at JavaOne at the last minute) and stepped on the case. When we woke up in the US this morning, 2 more apps had been submitted, had gone through JV testing, Orange Compatibility testing (thanks to NSTL) and had been uploaded into the Cellmania aggregator portal. They’re now ready to be uploaded into the shop. Just like that.

Tomorrow, it’s all over to the UK to get the 5 apps uploaded into the UK Application Shop and selling ... on 5 devices or more.

all's quiet on the western front

Nothing really to report today. The ingestion's happening, the content will then be uploaded into the UK portal, and we'll then be set to go.

More to follow tomorrow...

Tuesday 2nd June 2009

looks like we’re 24 hours ahead of the game...

Not wanting to count our chickens before they’re hatched... the testing’s been done, the contracts have been signed, and we’re well on our way to getting our 5 apps through and selling on the UK Application Shop.

The 5 apps went through Orange Compatibility and
Java Verified
testing in the UK last night while we were all asleep here in San Francisco, and we awoke to find some excellent results.

2 mobile apps had completely passed and the other three had one failure each. Well, I say ‘one failure’ but to be fair,

"apps being submitted"

we’re talking about a small coding error showing up on one handset each. Easily fixed, and the developer went back to his team in India to do it there and then. With our UK team picking up the new builds in the morning their time, we’ll wake up tomorrow to hopefully find all is well.

That leaves tomorrow to upload the builds into the Cellmania portal, and then all that’s left to do is for us to publish to the UK WAP site.

Until tomorrow...

Monday 1st June 2009

well, we're here, we're set-up and - wow - it's busy!

The doors to the Pavillion opened at 15:00 sharp this afternoon and we were immediately swamped with keen folks chomping at the bit to see what's going on.

Almost first onto the stand was Anand from Impetus Technologies: one of the holders of the 5 apps we're going to try and commercialise between now and the end of the event. He'd become a
Premium Member
and submitted his product using the Product Submission Form today before he got to JavaOne (good man), and was eager to come and tell us to make sure all was OK. And all was!

"the doors are now open"

(Amman told me they'd won the top innovation award at GSMA Asia lat November. Sounds promising).

Venki from Persistent Systems was next. Already working on a few projects with our Orange Labs guys in the UK, Venki had been a member of Orange Partner for a while, but it was only when prompted by the May newsletter that he decided to submit an app to us. Where have you been all this time Venki?!

And then came Priya from Impiger Technologies. Having closely followed the guidelines we'd sent to the successful candidates, we were impressed with Priya's attention to detail. Before she arrived, she'd become a Premium Member, submitted her app, and made sure the different sets of images were ready for tomorrow. That's what we like: plenty of preparation, and no last minute hitches .... we hope!

They'll all be back tomorrow for individual meetings with Cellmania - one of the aggregators we work with for the UK market.

So - all running smoothly ... so far. Watch this space for a further update tomorrow.

Sunday 31st May 2009

we're here and almost ready to go...

We've arrived in San Francisco, and are getting set up for JavaOne. There's a real buzz of anticipation in the air!

We've had a terrific response to the
'5 apps in 5 days' challenge
- so many 3rd parties keen to help us 'meet the challenge' and see if we can get their apps to market in 5 days!

Over the last couple of weeks, we've been busy reviewing ideas, and selecting those to take to market this week at JavaOne...

"getting our stand ready"

(If you missed out on the challenge, but have mobile apps that you'd like to see in the
Orange Application Shop
, then please submit them.)

We're looking forward to meeting folk tomorrow, seeing their apps, and working together to get them commercialised...

We'll be posting an update every day, so you can follow progress through submission, Industry Standard and Orange Compatibility testing, signing, contractual agreement, ingestion... and finally to go-live!

Will we meet the challenge and get 5 apps to market, on 5 devices, by the end of the week?

Check back tomorrow, to see how Day 1 progressed...
