Nokia Open C Challenge

The winners are announced!

The Challenge brought to you by Forum Nokia, in conjunction with Orange and Symbian was designed to stimulate and award the developers amongst you with prizes for applications that deliver value to customers.

The Open C categories of competition were to port an existing application to S60 or native development of an application using S60 and Open C.

The judging was based on the quality, usability, creativity, innovation and porting difficulty of the application.

On 3 December 2007, the finalists presented their applications to a judging panel made up of industry experts, influencers and journalists.

The winners

 MobiTubia - Winner of the Open C Challenge and $10,000 grand prize
 Live Traffic - 1st runner-up and winner of the $5,000 prize
 MobiClass  - 2nd runner-up and winner of the $3,000 prize
 ViewRight  - 3rd runner-up and winner of the $2,000 prize

MobiTubia - winner of the $10,000 for the grand prize

The winner of this year's Open C Challenge is MobiTubia developed by Sittiphol Phanvilai of Bangkok, Thailand. MobiTubia is a Flash Lite video player and YouTube portal application with real-time decoding for the S60 platform. The mobile user can access flv clips using several different methods. Additionally, the application allows users to browse and search for specific content on YouTube. MobiTubia was developed completely by Sittiphol over a 10 week period. Over 25,000 lines of code were ported into Open C for this endeavor and over 10,000 lines of new code were written.

Live Traffic - 1st runner-up and winner of the $5,000 prize

Live Traffic developed by Pu Zhihua of Shanghai, China. LiveTraffic is a traffic assistance software that provides real-time traffic volumes for all the major routes around Shanghai. The application leverages FCD (Floating Car Data) technology to acquire road traffic information anywhere anytime, and publishes mapped traffic information to Nokia phone users via GPRS or EDGE connections. Based on the traffic volumes the routes are color coded to indicate specific traffic volumes.

 Green indicates light traffic flow
 Yellow indicates moderate traffic flow
 Red indicates heavy traffic volumes.

LiveTraffic was developed by a four-member team over a one-month period. It consists of 8,500 total lines of code, 2,500 of which were ported.

MobiClass - 2nd runner-up and winner of the $3,000 prize

MobiClass developed by TongRen of Shanghai, China. MobiClass is a virtual multi-media courseware application designed to deliver an integrated learning experience with active notes and video playback. Courseware is downloaded to the device memory card for playback. MobiClass was developed over a two month period by a three-member team. The application consists of 18,000 total lines of code, 16,000 of which were ported.

ViewRight  - 3rd runner-up and winner of the $2,000 prize

ViewRight developed by Steve DeLaney from Carlsbad, California, USA. ViewRight is a Streaming mobile video application that allows users to watch television from their mobile devices. The application includes mobile video wireless download UI, proxy streaming, client and crypto middleware for Symbian 3G DVB-H H.264 platforms. ViewRight took three months to develop and consists of approximately 10,000 total lines of code, 5,000 of which were ported.
