Making the most of mobile devices for gaming

Jussi Holopainen, Head of Games Design Group, Nokia Research Centre. view biography

Small screen sizes, cumbersome user interfaces, and widely varying use situations limit the suitability of popular console and PC game types, such as fast paced 3D-shooters, for mobile phones. However, mobile phones are personal, trusted devices mainly used for social interaction.

Taking these characteristics into account enables the game designers to exploit the strengths and avoid the weaknesses of the platform in order to create games which would be impossible on other platforms.

A set of game design principles and techniques exploiting the characteristics will be presented.
