the contest

 who was the winner?
 who were the runners-up?
 who were the finalists?
who were the judges from Orange?
 what was the judging criteria?

With each Partner Camp the Orange Innovation Contest goes from strength to strength and the Cape Canaveral event was no different – but this time the rules were tougher and the competition harder!

Right up to the last minute entries were flooding in thick and fast…each competitor eager gain a dream opportunity to present their product or service to panel of judges (a captive audience of key decision makers from Orange and France Telecom Group in one room).

What better opportunity could there be to compete for the kudos and prestige of being singled out by Orange and France Telecom Group (one of the world's largest converged operators) as having the next best innovative product or service?

The number of entries this year eclipsed all previous events. Each judge carefully trawled through the 80 entries and awarded their individual scores to each entry.

The scores of each judge were collated and the companies with the highest scores were whittled down to a final list of 10 who were invited to carry out a 15 minute presentation to the judges at the event.

who was the winner?

Orange Innovation Contest winner - MyStrands social player by MyStrands

what is MyStrands social player?
MyStrands Social Player is a mobile media player that brings together the power of social networks with the on-the-go enjoyment and discovery of music.

what does it do?
MyStrands Social Recommendation and Discovery Technology is based on how people actually listen to music.

The target market is 15-34 year old media savvy consumers, who utilise MyStrands Social Player to organize their music libraries, reach additional information about their artists, discover new music tailored to their taste in near real-time as well as make new friends through music, thus creating mobile communities.

MyStrands' recommender captures the relationships established with songs through two sources. Firstly, there are Intentional Playlists that are composed and secondly there are Spontaneous Playlists that are sequences of tracks actually played by the listeners themselves in some sort of context.

The relationships between musical items capture the user patterns of music listening behavior on which MyStrands bases its recommender.

The judges felt that MyStrands was a great example of how to introduce new media content to users through personalisation that also takes into account the user's social network, and building a wider community using both the web and mobile.  The user-experience was simple and the product encapsulates a number of growing trends with the mobile arena.

who were the runners-up?

Of the 10 finalists two products were singled out as also being exceptional and were awarded the runner-up prizes.

 ebayPocket Auctions by Bonfire
 Motionized by RealEyes3D

ebay Pocket Auctions by Bonfire

what is ebay Pocket Auctions?
eBay Pocket Auctions allows users to search, bid, buy, use My eBay, and view descriptions and detailed images of eBay items. It is currently one of the top 10 selling mobile applications in the USA.

what does it do?
By allowing customers to access eBay and bid on items while away from their desktop computers, customers gain a competitive advantage over other bidders and sellers. The application also provides a price comparison tool that will assist all shoppers seeking the best price.

The application uses sophisticated caching and pre-fetching techniques to minimize the number of network connections needed and because different handset models provide varying amounts of memory, the application detects the available memory and adjust the caches on the fly. This results in a responsiveness and usability not normally associated with network-constrained wireless applications.

Motionized by RealEyes3D

what is Motionized?
Motionized enables motion detection and motion tracking of a mobile handset. The user's movement is used to control the user interface of mobile applications such as browsing a full web page, navigating in a high resolution picture, navigating inside maps, etc.

what does it do?
Navigation inside a high resolution picture, a web page, a map can be made by simply moving the wrist of the user. With simple gestures of the wrist, the user can zoom in and out, and pan inside the image/map/web page.

Zooming and panning become only gestures of the users hand instead of pushing buttons or using a joystick. A camera on the phone is used to analyse image flow and detect motion for navigation in pictures, maps and web pages. Zooming in and out does not require several clicks.

'We have been partners for a number of years and this was our first, but definitley not our last  partner camp. Was particularly useful for us in terms of meeting the right contacts in Orange and learning from other partners' best practice. Would recommend to all.'
