Orange Code Camp, Sarasota – an oasis of development and innovation

In the sizzling heat of Sarasota, in a quiet and laid-back resort, amongst the alligators and turtles …more than 200 mobile developers, business executives and technology experts descended to create an oasis - a pool of development and innovation!

Orange Code Camp, Sarasota – a unique, 24 hours a day event, running for 72 hours, providing delegates with an opportunity to find out about developing for the mobile world, working with Orange and its partners as well as networking and, of course, enjoying the Florida sunshine.

so what was it all about?

On the first morning, tutorials were held to help developers get up-to-speed on general topics vital to mobile development before getting started with the main workshops, coding and general development. These were followed by an impressive opening Pow-Wow, where everyone came together to find out more about Orange and what they could expect from the next two days.

On both evenings there were open 'birds of a feather sessions' to discuss a range of topics moderated by key industry representatives.

The 3 days of Code Camp were crammed with nearly 50 different workshops, tutorials and Q&A sessions; some of which were repeated to meet the demand.

'I didn't realise how much work we did and how much ground we covered in such a short time (a sure sign of  enjoying yourself).'

Dave Armstrong – Orbis Monitoring Services Ltd

It wasn't all work though.  There was time for relaxation, with a poolside BBQ on the opening evening with entertainment provided by conjurers and jugglers.  Delegates even had the opportunity to test drive a Segway, which was to be the winning prize for in the Orange Code Camp Contest.

At the spectacular Blow-out party on the second night, live music was provided the Funky Blues Messiahs followed with a DJ and dancing (spurred on by dance motivators).  Everyone had a goodtime relaxing and enjoying the music and games machines.

The excitement buzzing through Code Camp was generated by developers who were frantically working on application submissions for the Code Camp Contest to win a Segway Human Transporter.

The developer centre with live Orange 3G network and dozens of handsets were available 24 hours for testing and Orange experts were also on hand to give one-on-one advice to developers on commercialising their applications.

Finally, after an exhausting, productive and exhilarating three days, everyone came together for the closing Pow-Wow where awards were given to the applications that were submitted to the Code Camp Contest and everyone found out when and where the next Code Camp would take place…(Club Med: Opio, France, 17-20 October 2005).

the workshops

The workshops were arranged around four generic themes: navigating Orange; networks and more networks; testing, signature and validation; and, operating systems and execution environments.

Some of the workshops provided developers with the technical knowledge needed to develop for Symbian, Microsoft and Palm platforms and Nokia handsets.

'Our participants have attended dozens of similar events attempting to educate ISVs and developers. Code Camp vastly exceeded any other event we have attended.'

Jordan Serlin - Cenuco

Others took a look at existing mobile technologies; 2G, Edge and 3G and the improvements offered to data services by the evolving networks.

These were complemented by sessions which looked at evolving network technologies; in these delegates were introduced to IEEE802.everything and 3GPP.

We have removed the Code Camp, Sarasota presentations from this website, as the information is now out of date.

You can find the latest technical information in the relevant area of this site.

the development

We provided you with many opportunities as possible to speak with us. To develop and show us your products, to ask us your general and technical questions, and to generally communicate with us one-to-one.

To do this, we provided you with a Coding tent – a cool (air-conditioned) serene environment in which you could escape to code, 24-hour access to the Orange Developer Centre - a fully equipped technical environment with live 3G network and a plethora of devices to test on, plus the chance to 'Show Us Your Products' in one-to-one meetings.

'It was extremely worthwhile and I believe it showed how pro-active Orange is in developing new solutions and ideas. It also showed how approachable and easy to work with Orange can be.'

Dave Armstrong - Orbis Monitoring Services Ltd

the Pow-Wows

To complete the authentic camping experience, the Pow-Wows were an opportunity to come together to hear about what Orange is doing in the US, why we're so interested in developers, how we can help you develop for us, and what delegates could expect to get out of the three days at Orange Code Camp...

Topics that were covered in the Opening Pow-Wow included; a history of Orange, the differences between the European market and the US, the customer - including

market analysis and trends plus an insight into the technology. Also, David Wood, EVP of research for Symbian presented a key message from Symbian – our Platinum Sponsor at Orange Code Camp.

'I came away with a positive feeling about working with Orange... a truly innovative event.'

Arish Ali - Skava

The event was wrapped up at the Closing Pow-Wow. The winners of the Code Camp Contest were revealed awarded their prizes, a panel of the Orange Partner management team took questions, David Wood presented the Symbian Prize and the next Orange Code Camp was announced…

talk to Orange

The "Talk to Orange" slots were free-format Q&A sessions interspersed within the programme, designed to give you an opportunity to give us your feedback.

In the sessions, key members of the Orange Partner team answered some of your 'burning' questions. The regional managers, alliance managers, technical managers and some other Orange guests gathered to discuss your current topics of interest.

Are you getting all the information you need?  What do you want us to deliver?  Do you understand the Orange customer requirements?

Code Camp is a perfect forum for one-to-one, open and honest discussions with you, and provides us with the opportunity to get feedback on your needs.

In addition to the invaluable feedback that we received during the Talk to Orange sessions we have collated all the additional feedback from delegates since the event. This will be available shortly, along with the answers to your questions in a FAQ sheet on the website.

By understanding your needs we can continue to build a programme that works best for you. To do so, we'll be hosting a series of 'Talk to Orange' sessions at our Developer Centres, giving you more opportunities for one-to-one discussions with the Orange Partner team - find out more and register now

Code Camp Contest

The tension mounted as developers frantically worked through the night to complete their products for entry into the Code Camp Contest on the final day.

The competition was fierce and over 40 entries were received, many of which had been developed or finalised during the event.

A shortlist of 17 all met the criteria necessary to be considered for commercialisation by Orange, and it was an intensely difficult undertaking to choose the best entries.

Congratulations to all the winners and especially to Mobile Digital Media for their winning product Quick Office - Best Overall Product of the US Code Camp 2005, and the much sought after Segway Human Transporter.

the sponsors

Interspersed throughout the program there were sessions from our sponsors providing developers with everything they needed to know to develop for Symbian, Microsoft and Palm platforms and Nokia handsets.

Plus, there were competitions and give-aways throughout the 72 hours with an array of prizes including handsets, coding books and much more…

We would like to thank our sponsors for supporting us to make Code Camp such a success.

the fun

The fun element of Orange Code Camp life pervades throughout. It is just as important as the more serious business of application development - and Sarasota was no different.

The games machines – rally championship, table hockey and football, the chill-out room (sponsored by Sybase) complete with the latest CD's and DVD's, the pool-side barbeque and Blow-Out party fused together to make Code Camp a relaxed and informal environment in which to do business.

'I thought the best part was the "informal atmosphere". At one point, I was in my tank top and sandals (it was 85 degrees and humid--what do you want!?) pitching to Orange PMs, the sponsors, and each other... it was surreal.'

(Kevin Perkins, Greenlight Wireless)
