3G – get the latest figures for Europe and Asia
The number of European mobile broadband customers has overtaken Japan for the first time.

With 2.9 million new customers in January, W-CDMA users are nearing 50 million worldwide*. The UMTS Forum, meanwhile, even claims that this figure was actually passed at the end of January, with 3G users amounting to more than 72 million (W-CDMA and EV-DO).

In addition the UMTS Forum believes that Europe now accounts for 51% of customers worldwide (25 million) and has overtaken Japan for the first time (even though Japan still represents 48 % of the worldwide market with two operators).

In total, there are nearly 100 W-CDMA networks up and running in 42 countries.

The promise of mobile games – Part Three
In the third part of this feature we take a closer look at gaming communities in the USA.

In last month's newsletter we examined the mobile games strategies that have been adopted in Korea and Japan – this month we take a look at the gaming communities in the USA which are leveraging growth.

The American mobile games segment has had a sustained annual growth that is estimated to be about 61% over the period 2003 to 2008*. It has attracted big-name online games companies hoping to extend their activities and communities to the mobile. For this reason the segment is very much marked by a 'renaissance' of communities.

Internet games, mostly developed using Flash Shockwave and Java, are generally small applications that can be executed directly from the browser. Their simplicity makes them accessible to all generations of internauts.

Communities that initially built around these games to enable interaction between players, have now become an intrinsic part of the value of the game*.

Since 1996* online games have been the top source of revenues among paid services on the Internet. Since portals position themselves as public aggregators, communities have become an important means for gamers to define themselves within this audience and for the portals themselves to better design and target their services.

Mobile TV in search of a business model – Part Three
Let's understand the trends that will get usage moving in the third part of this feature written by Orange Badim.

We examine the typology of mobile TV content and the mobile TV trends so far, and examine them in an attempt to understand what will get usage moving.

Regardless of the technology used, the first statistics revealed by Orange Badim indicate that demand for mobile TV is essentially limited to 'early adopters', however the efforts of mobile operators and phone manufacturers to improve usability of the services and the handsets should stimulate more widespread uptake.

To date there is little feedback on mobile TV consumption habits. Orange UK estimates that 36.1% of users watch European operators suggest a total viewing duration of 22 to 30 minutes per month.

Push email made easy – we help you install your own Secure Sockets Layer (SSL) certificate onto your handsets
Orange Partner has developed a solution to allow you to install your own SSL certificate onto handsets without unlocking the phone.

With the release of AKU 2 for Windows Mobile 5.0 email Push has been introduced to Smartphones and Pocket PCs. The requirements for this are a server running Exchange 2003 Service Pack 2 and SSL certification between the device and the server.

The handset has a public key and the server has a private key. This email service uses SSL certification which means that the server and the handset must have matching certificates or key pairs so they know they are allowed to communicate with each other.

The easiest and best way to do this is to either buy an SSL certificate from a recognised supplier (e.g. VeriSign, Thawte, Equifax) and install it onto the Microsoft Exchange email server, or install your own (self-created) certificate onto the server and handsets.

However, installing your own certificate on the handset is not an option without either having a privileged application installed, or having your device unlocked.

To help resolve this issue we will create a privileged application that will install the certificate on the handset for you.

Parlay X – influence the creation of the new APIs
Developers - give your opinions on how applications will operate across multiple, networking-platform environments.

The Parlay Group is a multi-vendor consortium, working with ETSI and 3GPP to develop open, technology-independent APIs.

Parlay X APIs are created and developed through a dedicated process – the Parlay Group's Parlay Accelerator Programme. The output from this process is then fed into the standardisation process at 3GPP.

Through Orange Partner you can now add your ideas to this process (even if you're not a member of The Parlay Group), and you can comment on the 13 existing APIs. Are there parameters or functions missing? Let us know…

So that you can submit and debate your API ideas, we've set up a discussion forum on the website where your views can be taken to The Parlay Group for possible development.

Recent APIs under development are; Bulk MMS and SMS Management, Parlay X Data Record, Extended Call Control, Geocode and Mapping, Message Broadcast and Multimedia Streaming & Control.
