Mobile Web Initiative (MWI) – the latest from the Device Descriptions Working Group (DDWG) workshop The MWI's workshop to discuss implementing a Device Description Repository (DDR) took place in Madrid, 12-13 July.
The controversial France Telecom Group R&D paper that was recently published on the proposed on the DDR, was presented to the MWI at the workshop.
The FTR&D paper outlines views on the challenges, opportunities and problems facing a DDR, and proposed a different solution to that of the MWI, which could be adopted by all the stakeholders in the value chain (handset manufacturers, operators, content adapters and profile vendors/keepers).
You can now download the paper and the accompanying presentation slides which provide you with a rationale behind the paper >
If you'd like to keep up to date on the latest from the Mobile Web Initiative, (launched by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) and influence the performance and usability of the web on mobile phones, email us at developers@orange.com with 'MWI_enthusiast' in the subject line and your Orange Partner username in the email.

Music: mobiles practice their scales – The first part of this special feature Check out the latest 'hot topic' in our series of features on various areas of mobile multi-media.
Music is fast becoming a key component of operators' offerings. With the development of broadband networks and the appearance of music-dedicated handsets, mobiles are now competing directly with personal MP3 players.
Aware of this potential for attracting customers and developing usage (traffic, content), operators are moving into this sector, setting up joint sales strategies with record labels and handset manufacturers.
Despite ringtones still making up 98% of mobile music purchases in 2005, it is expected that this will slowly reduce and give way to full-track mobile music downloads (40% of turnover by 2011).
The mobile music universe is a complicated one: digital rights management (DRM), intermediaries and content aggregation are all major issues. Labels generally keep 45-50% of the cost of a song, operators 45% and service suppliers 5-10%.
Operators are extending their ranges to rich content: albums, live concerts or interviews. With double downloads (to mobile and to a PC) and the appearance of Music web portals, mobiles are getting closer to the world of the Internet.
Having already looked in depth at mobile games and TV, we now taker a closer look at mobile music; the usage so far, the mobile music industry, the key services on offer and the handsets…more >
