Orange launches the UK's first EDGE network – improving the delivery of advanced mobile services
The EDGE network complements Orange's existing 3G network

Orange now has 300 network sites enabled for Enhanced Data for GSM Evolution (EDGE) across the UK, with the intention to have over 1,500 sites enabled for EDGE by the end of the year.

The EDGE network which complements the 3G network allows our customers to benefit from faster data speeds when using advanced mobile services such as email-on-the-move, the Internet, and music and video downloads.

EDGE provides download and browsing speeds that are up to three-times faster than GPRS.

At launch, there are already a number of 3G and EDGE-enabled handsets in the Orange portfolio such as the Nokia 6280, 6630, 6680 and N70, and the SPV M5000.

In addition, Orange will also introduce two new EDGE-enabled products to the UK business market this quarter - the BlackBerry® 8700g(tm) and Business Everywhere laptop data card.

Business Everywhere users will benefit from the best network for business and seamless access to the EDGE, 3G, GPRS and Wifi networks. The BlackBerry 8700g features an Intel processor and a re-engineered device platform that supports faster Web browsing and application performance.

Across Europe, Orange now has EDGE networks in the UK, France, Slovakia, Romania, Poland and Belgium (Mobistar).

The Mobile Web Initiative needs your feedback – respond to the Best Practice Recommendations
Developers - your feedback is requested by 17 February

If you're a developer wishing to shape the future of mobile web content – be sure to have your say.
The MWI has released a last call working draft of the Mobile Web Best Practice Recommendations document, and your input is needed by 17th February, via the Orange Partner programme.

To develop successful content, you need to understand the technical limitations of mobile browsers, the diversity of hardware that is out there, and the practical difficulties and frustrations faced by users trying to navigate from a phone keypad.

Diversity is a big issue! Launched by the World Wide Web Consortium (W3C) in May 2005, the MWI looks at improving the performance and usability of the web on mobile phones.

Orange Partner is working with France Telecom Group Research & Development (France Telecom Group R&D) to ensure that our members can get involved in influencing this important process.

It's by developers for developers, and will shape the future of mobile web content!

Become an enthusiast on the Orange Partner website, read the Best Practice Recommendations paper, and post your comments on the exclusive MWI forum – we'll ensure that your comments are fed back to the MWI!

New on the website – the Orange France Location API
Orange Partner members you can now use the French API when developing your location-based products

The Orange Location API enables interrogation of the Orange network in a given country to establish the location of Orange customers in that country at a given time, and it can be integrated into mobile applications, providing location based services

'Direct Connection', the Location Service from Orange France is a passive location service which determines the exact location of an Orange France customer.

Using Direct Connection, content publishers can design innovative applications enabling customers to take advantage of 'local' services on the Orange World portal and Gallery.

Orange is working to ensure that APIs are available across all European operations. The Orange UK and Orange France Location APIs are the first to be commercialised.

The promise of mobile games – by 2009 mobile games will become the second source of data revenues
After developing on the PC and home and portable consoles, games are now appearing on the mobile.

Over the next few editions of the Orange Partner newsletter we'll provide you with an exclusive insight into this growing segment, helping you to understand the essentials.

We'll look at the development of the market as whole, take a closer look at Korea and Japan (the grand masters), and games communities in the USA. Plus, we'll examine the European market and what is being done to create wider adoption.

The potential of this new segment appears to be almost as promising as mobile music, although large geographic disparities exist. While mobile games have enjoyed immense success in Asia and games communities are very popular in the USA, the European mobile market is still wide open.

In Asia mobile games have overtaken personalisation services. In the USA the creation of mobile gaming communities over the internet has been determinant in developing games. In Europe games are having trouble getting started, but we are seeing some interesting initiatives in the form of service demonstrations and tariff policies.
