France Telecom Group quarterly results, revenues up by 3.8% - find out the growth segments
Against a backdrop of accelerated technological changes there's been an improvement in the Group's competitive position and an even better time for you to continue to work with us!

It's been another good quarter for the France Telecom Group, with some key growth in the personal (mobile communications) segment across the France Telecom Group footprint, with revenues rising by 6.7% in the third quarter.

Growth in the Orange Group customer base has also picked up pace bringing the total to 57.9 million at September 30 2005.

Strong customer gains were made in Poland, Romania and Egypt, and the acquisition of Spanish mobile operator Amena is on track to complete this month (November) adding more than 10 million new customers to the personal (mobile communications) segment.

3G and EDGE mobile broadband customers across the Orange footprint have doubled to 643,000 with Orange France having 424, 000 customers and Orange UK 158,000 remaining on target for 1.5m 3G customers by the end of 2006.

In the UK there are currently 10 devices supporting 3G services, and the trend of 2G to 3G migration is becoming increasingly encouraging. Plus Orange has the broadest integrated 2G/3G network in the UK covering over 70% of the population.

Industry standard testing – test your solutions against industry standards
Designed to help you prepare your application for submission to Orange

Orange Partner has teamed up with NSTL (National Software Testing Labs) to provide you with a tool to test your applications and solutions against Industry Standards, helping to make the process potentially easier and cheaper for Orange Partner premium members.

The tool allows you to submit your applications for Java Verified, Mobile2Market, Palm Powered Mobile World or Symbian Signed certification.

Additionally NSTL testing is carried out using Orange handsets. This testing contributes towards part of your Orange compatibility testing, helping to speed up the process of getting your product into the Orange internal product catalogue.

To take full advantage you must be a premium member of the Orange Partner programme.

The Code Camp Contest – find out who glided away on the Segway
The competition was fierce, the submissions were plenty, the quality was high, a decision was finally made, and the winner was announced!

The Code Camp Contest at Opio - which ran during the event - drew the fiercest competition yet and had a record number of entries.

Developers were encouraged to code and complete projects during the event itself. The shortlist all met the criteria necessary to be considered for commercialisation by Orange, and it was (as always) difficult to choose the best entries.

Congratulations to Sudoku from Astraware who glided away on the Segway Human Transporter.

Capitalising on the recent popularity of Sudoku games, Astraware's mobile game is suitable for players of all abilities and features include 6 levels of difficulty.

Handsets for emerging markets - a new trend of low-cost models
Find out about what is being done in emerging markets to increase the uptake of mobile phones.

As the Media Lab Department at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) looks at the feasibility of a laptop computer costing no more than US$100 (€82) and destined for emerging countries, mobile phone makers are under pressure too, notably from the GSM Association, to see how they could make cheaper models.

Identified as the principle fact of holding back mobile uptake in emerging markets, the cost of the phone is the focus of an initiative in 2004, by the GSM Association. In the first phase of this project, a handset specification and tender was sent to manufacturers inviting them to produce an "Ultra Low-Cost Handset" at less than $40 (€33).

In addition to a few cellphone recycling specialists, 18 manufacturers responded with bids.

Find out who won the bid, the handsets that are being produced, and the breakdown of customers in emerging markets, plus what the second phase of the initiative will be.

3G Evolution – which regions have the highest growth?
Find out where the areas of growth are by region (Asia and Europe) and by Standard

With 1.56 million new customers recruited in August, the W-CDMA base reached 31.2 million, almost twice as big as that of the rival standard CDMA2000 1xEV-DO.

The majority of these net sales were in Japan: 1.1 million or 70% of all new customers worldwide. DoCoMo took the lion's share thanks to the success of its 901iS and 701iS phones released in June and July and a reduction in prices of its old 901 and 701i ranges.

The Italian market reconfirms its title of the world's no.3 market, with more than 6.2 million customers.

Handsets – find out the global number of sales by vendor and technology
Strategy Analytics reports that the second quarter of 2005 saw an acceleration in handset sales with operators buying 185 million units from manufacturers (+16% year-on-year, + 10% compared to Q1 2005).

Sales were driven by increasing demand in emerging markets, notably South America where migration from TDMA networks to GSM has boosted sales of GSM models (+31% in one year).

Mobile multi-media – the weight of mobile data
Learn about the growth of mobile multi-media and look at the trends.

Figures released by operators and compiled by CSFB and Orangebadim show that in Q2 2005 data services brought in just over 17% of total mobile service sales in Europe (+3 points YoY).

Little by little, the weight of SMS is declining in operators' data revenues, as a result of pressure on prices and the takeoff of other services. Even so, the absolute SMS revenues of operators continue to rise.

This decline is not due to substitution of SMS by MMS, but to the rise of downloading services (games, videos, ringtones, etc.) and browsing (portals) both of which are now being actively promoted by operators.

Orange Code Camp Opio – a jamboree of development and networking
Over 450 attendees came together at Opio to create the biggest Code Camp so far – and one of the busiest partner bashes of the year!

Representatives from Orange, our Sponsors, the Operating Systems and manufacturers, mobile application creators, games publishers and content providers all came together for three days in France.

The days were packed with over 100 sessions, on a range of subjects within both commercial and technical themes. These were aimed at providing partners with all the information and technical tools required to develop and commercialise solutions with Orange.

Read through the sessions summaries and download the presentations >

Some of the sessions were so popular, so we've decided to create a virtual seminar on them, available to those of you who could not join us in Opio – find out more >

Demos, informal talks, speaker chats, 'show us your products' sessions (where attendees showcased their products to members of the Orange Partner team) coding and development, and much much more took place in the Developer Centre.

The popularity of the 'Show Us Your Products' sessions was yet again immense... we saw some great products, discussed ideas in detail, matched our requirements with attendees' solutions, and provided lots of feedback on what we saw.

The evenings were a great opportunity for networking and the nights came alive with some great parties.

Check out the Code Camp web pages and re-live the entire experience >
