  October 2007
  hello ...

Welcome to the October edition of the Orange Partner newsletter.

There are many changes taking place in the industry this month. Nokia is purchasing Navteq, and I am sure their joint developer initiative will be exciting. Also, rumours abound that AT&T is thinking of expanding in Asia. Hopefully it will not have the same negative conclusion they had when expanding into Europe two decades ago. Here at Orange Partner, we are stable and continue to offer developer and partner services that we hope you take advantage of.

A great event coming up is our 'mash-up and develop with Orange' European tour. We held this event in San Francisco earlier this year and it was hugely successful. We will now hold the European version in – London, Paris and Madrid. I hope to see you there. Please register early though as spaces are reserved quickly and we don't want you to be disappointed. We are already 75% full for the London event.

Unlimited strategies in mobile data services
Read though this article compiled by Orange Badim and find out how the principle of the 'unlimited offer' is affecting mobile pricing strategies

Originating in the United States and providing highly popular in Japan, the principle of the 'unlimited offer' is now affecting mobile pricing strategies.

The offers first appeared in 'voice' and are now permeating 'data' offerings, at a time when mobile portals are opening up to Web services. This is causing mobile operators to increase the use of an open mobile Internet environment and defend the mobile's position as a distribution channel in the race for new revenue.

Introduced in 1998 by AT&T Wireless in the United States, the rate at which they have spread in the past five years has helped to triple the country's voice traffic and maintain ARPU despite a drop in prices.

In Europe, unlimited voice offerings increased between 2000 and 2003 and since then this pricing model as been used to help in the fight against decreasing voice ARPU.

Today, faced with the drop in voice revenue, operators are transposing the unlimited model to mobile data services in the hope of increasing use and thus generating new revenue.

Homezone or technology terminal? May the best offer win
Read through this article compiled by Orange Badim and find out about the competition between convergent mobile/WiFi terminals and FMS (fixed mobile substitution) offers (aka. Homezone offers).

During Summer 2006, convergence saw the light of day in France. While Neuf Cegetel was launching its TWIN telephone, Orange presented Unik, a convergent offer priced at €10 a month with three bi-mode mobile/WiFi terminals.

One year later, these first two pioneering offers have attracted much interest. The market finally took off, with nearly 300,000 Unik phones sold by Orange in late June, half of which were purchased during the three preceding months.

In Germany, according to a Study led by Cap Gemini, 17 million German households (i.e. 45% of the population) were interested in fixed-to-mobile substitution offers, also known as "homezones". The operators, however, have differing opinions.

Read the full article and find out which offers have been successful and why despite the various problems for operators, Europe remains the international leader in the convergence market >
