word from the top: a June overview from Steve Glagow
May
seemed to pass by quickly, but it was not short of announcements in the
industry. The plethora of application shops being introduced is either
exciting or very boring. Everyone from Qualcom and Vodafone to Sun have
announced something. Who else is left? I suppose we will see what's
announced in June! As an industry though, we continue to focus on retention
and providing value add to our customers. If application shops offer that,
then the more the merrier.
We geared up for our extremely successful ‘5 apps in 5 days’ challenge this
past month, which culminates in the selection of applications at JavaOne
this week. We will demonstrate how we can maintain quality control, and
still be able to fast-track applications into our shop in a few short days.
We will highlight the selected applications in the July newsletter - I hope
one is yours!
We are in San Francisco this week at JavaOne. We have a booth here, and
we’re celebrating our 5th birthday. Orange Partner launched at Java One in
2004, so we have elected to have a big party here this year. Stop by the
booth to collect your invite. If you are in San Francisco for JavaOne, you
may also want to stop by our San Francisco developer center to make use of
the developer centre facilities there.
On May 8th, we held a very successful Orange Partner Camp China in early
May, sponsored by Sony Ericsson and the Symbian Foundation. Our focus was
on new content for the Orange Application Shop. Special thanks to our team
in Beijing who made this happen, and thanks to all of the attendees who
travelled far and wide to attend. For a summary of the event, please visit
the Orange Partner website.
And lastly, my PA, Sophie, is going on maternity leave for the next 12
months. A big congratulations are in order! We may even post pictures later
this year.
I hope to see you at our birthday party at JavaOne, or to hear from you
directly.
Best
regards,
Steve
Glagow

Java: Java Verified,
and de-fragmentation guidelines to get your app to market, fast
Did you
know that we’re on the Java Verified board? We fully support what Java
Verified achieves at a Standards level – quality, tested applications.
Java Verified will be announcing some major changes at JavaOne – we can’t
tell you any more about these now, but watch for more on our website later
this week (or if you’re at JavaOne, make sure you follow up with the Java
Verified team directly!).
And we also support Java de-fragmentation - we want to help you get your
application to market as quickly as possible: it’s a waste of your time
developing multiple versions of the same application, unnecessarily.
We encourage you to read and use our de-fragmentation guidelines – created
in partnership with Sun, to help you develop applications that cope with
the existing device base, without the need for you to generate hundreds of
different versions.
Simply get your apps to market faster, without compromising on quality.

Orange Compatibility
testing: endorsing quality applications
Orange
Compatibility testing is undertaken to ensure your app works faultlessly
over the Orange network, on Orange devices.
We’re committed to providing quality applications to our customers. So we
insist all apps pass Orange Compatibility testing before being accepted for
sale to our customers – ensuring a faultless experience of buying and using
your apps. It’s in your interests to pass these tests.
find out more about Orange
Compatibility testing >
Once you’ve passed Orange Compatibility testing, you can apply to use the
“Orange Compatible” mark. You can use this in your own marketing as an
endorsement of quality, to show the outside world that we believe your
application functions properly on the Orange network.
