September 2008

hello...

I hope you have enjoyed the summer. We finally had a spurt of warm weather here in the UK over the last few days, and it has been terrific!  I have just returned from a week in Israel where I was privy to much innovation. Everyone I met with was open and enthusiastic about their technology, and it has been a pleasure to work with them.

This summer we have seen the introduction of the Apple iShop, where without a doubt, they have got it right. They are already approaching the 100 millionth download which beats most application shops' yearly downloads! In addition the rumours of the Android application (content) shop seem to be true, but it also seems that the first version will be free downloads, followed by revenue-based. Of course they need to build a base of users first. Microsoft is also rumoured to be opening an application shop called Skymarket.

Our Application Shop in the UK is beginning to heat up, with our first WAP homepage access on August 28 drawing a great reaction from the users in the UK. The Orange Belgium Shop has gone live on WAP, and the Orange Spain Application Shop will be following in the next few months. If you have French, Dutch or Spanish content or applications, please get in touch right away. We have a big push for content and applications going on now, as the success of the iShop has brought much attention from our executive team and the Orange countries. You'll see that we're offering prizes for new apps which go live in the Shop in September/October...

We will be having two 'Orange mobile routes-to-market' partner days in October in the UK and France, focusing on routes-to-market for your mobile applications, games and VOD products. The next Orange Partner Camp will now take place 15-17th December in Cape Canaveral, Florida, US. Registration for camp opens 22nd September, so please sign up early as it tends to sell out fast.

I will also be back in Israel on September 15th for Mobile Monday, and the 16th at the GSMA Mobile Innovations Awards; I then move onto Berlin on September 18th for the OSIM conference. Hopefully I will see you at one or more of these events.

By the way, we're still expanding our API offering at great speed, and adding new functionality as we go. And we're really interested to know how you're using our APIs. Take a look at the API Contest just launched... If you haven't started working with the APIs yet, log on now to be one of the first to utilise the new connections.

Until next month, I wish you a great last few days of summer.

Orange Application Shop - the latest...

The Shop in the UK, Belgium and Spain - there's a lot happening

The Orange Belgium Application Shop is now live from the Orange Belgium WAP site, for a selection of handsets, and is being released on additional handsets every week. The Shop has been promoted externally to customers through advertising in the Orange Belguim Orange World magazine, and initial customer take-up has been very positive.
The Shop will be available from the Belgium website later in 2008.

We're excited to tell you about a new opportunity on the horizon - Orange Spain will soon be having an Application Shop.

Details are still being finalised, but we're accepting Spanish applications in preparation for launch...

The Application Shop in the UK continues to grow. Those of you in the UK may have seen the banner promoting the Shop on the Orange World homescreen last week, which prompted a huge spike in sales... and there are more promotional opportunities in the pipeline.

To keep up with the Application Shop expansion (and having received lots of great feedback from you), we've re-organised the info on the Orange Partner site, to explain what we're doing more clearly. Take a look at the site, and if you have French or Dutch, Spanish or English applications, then submit them to us now to be considered for the Orange Application Shop >

(If you've got an app (or a game or VOD) you want to show us, that may be suitable for the Application Shop, come along to one of our two 'Orange mobile routes-to-market' events in October, and show us face-to-face...)

win with the Orange Application Shop

We're offering some great prizes for new applications which are submitted and go live in the Application Shop between 1st September and 31st October this year...

   1. €1000 cash draw for all new apps
   2. free handset of your choice for all new companies
   3. 'best of' awards for all new apps (2 winners will win €1500 cash, internal and external promotion for their application, and one free entry ticket to our award-winning Partner Camp event - taking place in Florida in December 2008 www.orangepartnercamp.com)

video online in Europe: growth and creation of value

Far from replacing television, watching videos online appears to be in addition to other image viewing and entertainment practices. Nearly a quarter of the top 25 most-visited Internet sites are those which offer videos, and 28% of European Internet users view videos online in Western Europe.

French users score highest, with 89.9 videos viewed per Internet user. This popularity is following increase in dedicated platforms like YouTube, and also progression of high-speed connections in households. While currently more than 85% of sites operate free of charge, it is clear that users are prepared to pay for more elaborate content, and it is estimated that revenue linked to paid-for content will be multiplied by 11 by 2012.
