Java Verified

Orange Partner is committed to providing quality applications for our customers.

We currently chair the Java Verified board, showing our full support of Java Verified and what it represents – quality tested apps at an Industry Standard level.

Some major changes have taken place for Java Verified and the program, including a new collaborative project called JATAF, all supported by a new version of their website.

what is the Java Verified program

The Java Verified™ Program provides a streamlined testing process for mobile Java applications, enabling developers and wireless operators to confidently develop, deliver and monetize mobile applications.

Apps tested and signed by the Java Verified Program meet the industry-recognised test criteria created by mobile Java technology experts, including leading device manufacturers and network operators. As an open, industry-driven effort, the Java Verified Program is the first program to utilise the testing framework developed by the Unified Testing Initiative (UTI).

Java Verified testing is highly recognised and respected around the world for its industry-recognised testing criteria and the resulting ability to identify quality Java mobile applications.

The program also provides an easy way to promote applications to leading device manufacturers, distributors and wireless network operators, who all recognise Java Verified as a mark of quality.

benefits - why get Java Verified?

Reduce your development costs and time to market while improving your opportunities for success.

Test your app cost-effectively and impartially against industry-approved test criteria.

If you're testing multiple devices, the new streamlined JV process will reduce your time and
costs by an average of 50%.

The new Publisher ID protects you and your app, ensuring that operators and manufacturers
see you and your app as trustworthy and reliable.

Java Verified's R&D signing allows you to see exactly how your signed app will behave on any
given device(s) before it's actually been signed.

new Java Verified capabilities

Java Verified have expanded capabilities for application testing. This provides developers with new tools for ensuring quality throughout the entire testing process and the ability to test applications across a greater number of devices at a significant cost savings compared to previous testing models.

New Java Verified capabilities include:

Publisher ID The Publisher ID is a tamper-proof digital certificate that identifies the origin of the application and authenticates the identity of the person or company providing it. This identifier builds accountability, trust and quality assurance across the submission, signing and verification process.
R&D Signing R&D signing allows developers to test their applications and insure that they will behave properly and as expected on a "live" device during the development process, prior to signing it. This can allow for faster implementations because developers can correct functionality issues prior to ending the testing process.
Streamlined Test Procedures New UTC v3.0 testing criteria has been streamlined so that developers can continue to test applications, against a wide variety of devices, but in a more cost effective manner. Developers will find these new options valuable because repeat testing on multiple devices is now handled via one full test per platform, and reduced testing on the other devices in the platform. This makes the testing process faster, easier and less expensive.

JATAF - the new collaborative project

JATAF, the Java Application Terminal Alignment Framework, is a new collaborative project involving companies and developers working to make Java a truly ubiquitous platform for application deployment and committed to addressing Java ME fragmentation.

Orange Partner is a founding member along with others, each making open source contributions to the project.

the goal of JATAF

The goal of JATAF is to provide a more consistent platform for development by allowing developers to contribute to a series of open source tests that operators, manufacturers and developers can perform to ensure device implementations function consistently and problem-free across a wide range of deployment scenarios.

JATAF will provide tests, and a framework to run those tests under the philosophy that the more developers contribute to the testing effort, the faster de-fragmentation of the underlying platforms can happen, leading to larger device deployment bases.

Orange Partner and Java Verified

We’re committed to quality – we insist on application testing, so our customers have a faultless experience when using your apps. This is why we strongly support Java Verified – because it endorses application testing at an Industry Standards level and ensures high levels of quality.

We encourage you to use the Java Verified test criteria as part of your own QA process; passing Java Verified will then be very easy for you.

Java de-fragmentation guidelines
Orange Partner supports Java de-fragmentation because we want to help you get your application to market as quickly as possible: it’s a waste of your time and money developing multiple versions of the same application unnecessarily. We support JATAF for the same reasons - the project aims to provide a more consistent platform for Java development, leading to larger device deployment bases and reducing fragmentation of underlying platforms.

We strongly encourage you to read and use our de-fragmentation guidelines

Trusted Developer status

Java Verified announced Trusted Status: a privileged status to be granted to developers who will have proven that the quality of their Java ME apps is of a consistently high standard.

Simple App Testing launched

Java Verified announced a new set of Java Verified tests enabling Simple Java ME applications to gain Java Verified endorsement very cost-effectively.

Unified Testing Initiative (UTI) is now independent

UTI - home to the Java Verified program - has become an independent, not-for-profit industry association, run by AT&T, LG, Motorola, Nokia, Oracle, Orange, Samsung, Sony Ericsson and Vodafone, with full program management responsibility and direction-setting.
